Our History
"Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set"
[Proverbs 22:28]

Sons of Solomon No. 166 is a regular constituted lodge of Free and Accepted Masons Prince Hall Affiliated located in Jacksonville, FL. The lodge works underneath the protection of the Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge of Florida, Belize, Central America, USVI and its Jurisdictions. Sons of Solomon No. 166 has been a hardworking lodge since its inception in the mid 1890’s thereby earning the distinct title of Legendary.

The first Worshipful Master of Sons of Solomon No. 166 was the late Elder Rueben Brooks. In addition to being a Mason he was the Elder of the AME churches in St. Augustine, FL and a Civil Rights activists. Elder Brooks led the biggest boycott of any public transportation system right here in Jacksonville, FL with the La Villa Trolley Company. His zealous works also carried over into his Masonic career as he ran for the seat of Grand Master and lost a close race to Grand Master Dickerson. He did serve as the Grand Secretary and Deputy Grand Master until the AME church relocated him out of the area.

Sons of Solomon No. 166 grew to over 400 members under the leadership of WM D.D. Powell. What makes this such an achievement is the fact that during those times when a brother joined the local lodge ,he also became a voting member of the Grand Lodge, thereby giving Sons of Solomon the majority vote within the Grand Lodge. In 1916, PM  Powell ran for, and won, the seat of Grand Master, making him the 7th Most Worshipful Grand Master of this jurisdiction, where he sat for 28 years, making him the longest serving Grand Master ever in our jurisdiction and the first Grand Master not to die in the seat. During his tenure, among numerous accolades, he became a key contributor to the Green's Manual, Heroines of Jericho ritual and was the first Grand Master to pay off the Grand Lodge's first mortgage. GM Powell was said to be one of the most progressive minded Grand Masters of our Jurisdiction.  The legacy of GM D.D. Powell is still working through the lodge during present day.

Even though Sons of Solomon No. 166 was once the biggest lodge in the jurisdiction eventually the lodge will decline in membership and productivity. Eventually the lodge charter was rested. In 1950, Sons of Solomon No. 166 was reorganized by Past Master Willie Miles with the assistance of his friend Nathaniel McClinton of North Jax No. 387 who demitted into Sons of Solomon No. 166. Bro. Nathaniel McClinton took over the Oriental Chair in late 1952 where he served for 12 years. PM Nathaniel McClinton established many programs that we currently utilize to this day.

Since the reorganization of our lodge we have promoted many of members preside in the chair of higher houses. One of the most influential members of our lodge is Honorary Past Grand Master Russell A. Earl, Sr. HPGM Russell A. Earl, Sr. has displayed his knowledge and progressive thinking on the national level by ascending to the head of three national bodies. HPGM Russell A. Earl, Sr. truly exemplifies the true definition of a mason through his teachings and actions.

Sons of Solomon No. 166 has a vibrant history that is second to none. From the inception of the lodge in the mid 1890’s to present day every move has been legendary.

One of our biggest efforts is our Scholarship Fund. We also contribute to The American Diabetes Association, Susan G. Komen, The Liberty House and several other organizations. We regularly participate in "Light the Night Walk" for Leukemia and Lymphoma and countless other events to show our love for the people in our community. Sometimes, however, we still need a little extra help. If you find it in your hearts to help us by means of a financial donation, please send it to us via cashapp to $sonsofsolomon.
